Untitled
Unfinished oil painting that has been sidelined for the time being.
1
Starting a new piece with another Burnt Sienna wash. Sketching in main forms and composition, then building a beautiful sky of cirrus.
2
Working in the rough crags of Guanella’s summit. Shadows require varied values based on their relation to the sun. Meticulous snow patches add depth to the peaks.
3
The barren timberline of Guanella takes form with the vague addition of scrub brush.
4
Depth of the piece continues to coalesce. Addition of greater detail to the scrub brush. Foreground foundation being laid utilizing a mantra I have adopted: “Just get paint on the canvas.”
5
Foreground of long grass and short created with various hues of neutral yellows finishes the piece. Individual brushstrokes for flower petals, blades of grass, etc. lend detail to give greater texture.
6
I fibbed. After days upon days of staring at it, I decided it wasn’t finished. It was too…one dimensional, too flat, too…something. But whatever it was - it was lacking. Addition of almost imperceptible shadow and highlight details gave a slightly better impression of realism. See if you can spot the differences.
1
We start with a Burnt Sienna wash for this piece, then rough outlining using brilliant rose or similar, or any other color really. Various blues or violets also work well. Basic color blocking defines composition.
2
Additional color blocking. Detailing starts.
3
Nearly finished.
